With proper prep a hairstyle can go from good to great and will save time during your appointment. How you prep your hair will vary depending on the desired look, your hair density and texture. Read on to learn the 3 steps to prepping your hair for a hairstyle.

Step 1: Wash your hair the day before.

Yes to clean hair! I know a lot of people will come to their appointment with dirty hair because they have heard dirty hair provides more hold. But why do that when I can just add more product to your hair to create hold? No one wants to go to an event with week old hair. So yes come to your appointment with clean hair and i recommend washing the day before to prevent ignoring the next step.

Step 2: Come to your appointment with dry hair.

Coming to your appointment with dry hair is a must. If you come to your appointment with wet hair time is taken up in your appointment to just dry it which doesn't allow as much time to style. Which means there might not be time to achieve your desired look. How I recommend to dry your hair will vary depending on density and texture.

Fine to medium / straight or wavy: Us a volumizing product and blow-dry your hair to give it as much body as possible.

Medium to course / wavy or curly: Use a smoothing product and blow dry your hair as smooth as possible.

Do not use a flat iron or curling iron on your hair as it will fight against the hot tools used by your hairstylist the next day.

If you have naturally curly hair and want to wear it curly (which I prefer) wash your hair the day of and set your curls and air dry or diffuse. Make sure you are later on the hair schedule because you will need time the morning of to prep your curls. This is the only exception for morning prep.

Step 3: Bedtime Hair Prep

After blow drying do not put hair in a braid and if you put it up use a scrunchie. You don't want to create any unwanted dents in the hair. I recommend going to bed with your hair up with a scrunchie or wearing a silk bonnet. Silk pillowcases are a huge help too because they create a smoother surface for your hair preventing friction that can cause breakage.
