Having a proper wash day routine is important for the health of your hair and scalp. It will also make your hair more manageable and allow you to go longer between washes. Read on to learn wash day do’s and don’ts.

Hair brush

Before You Wash:

Do: Brush your hair before washing it. Brushing your hair before washing reduces tangles and makes it easier to remove build up by breaking it up first. Brushing is also good for you scalp by promoting blood circulation which promotes hair growth.

Don’t: Start brushing from your roots. Instead start at the ends of your hair and work your way up. This will put less tension on your hair which will prevent breakage.

Shampooing:

Don’t: Wash your hair every day. Instead wash every 2-4 days. Click here to read my blog post “Finding The Perfect Hair Washing Schedule: How Often Should I Wash My Hair?” For tips on how to go longer between washes.

Do: Emulsify your shampoo. Pour shampoo into palms of hands first and rub your hands together to create a gentle lather.

Do: Scrub your scalp, not your hair.

Don't: Scrub your scalp with your nails when washing. Instead use the bottom of your finger tips.

Do: Wash your hair twice. Your first shampoo is to remove buildup and your second shampoo is to get the benefits of the shampoo.

Don’t: Shampoo the ends of your hair. Only shampoo the roots and then let the lather wash down your hair. Washing the ends of your hair will dry it out.

Do: Use the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. These are the Amika shampoos and conditioners I recommend for each hair type. Click here to shop Amika.

Conditioning:

Do: Apply conditioner mids to ends.

Don't: Apply conditioner to your roots because it will weigh your hair down and cause it to get oily sooner.

Do: Leave your conditioner in for a few minutes before rinsing.

Do: Use a weekly hair mask to strengthen your hair and keep it healthy. Click here to read my blog post "Which Hair Mask Is Best For My Hair? for recommendations.
