Hand Tied Extensions Before & After

You made a big investment getting hair extensions so it's important to know how to take care of them. Especially in the summer when the most damage can occur. Read on to learn the 5 must follow summer hair care tips for your hair extensions.

sunscreen

Tip # 1 - Use Mineral Sunscreen

Mineral sunscreen is recommended when wearing hair extensions because chemical sunscreens can discolor them, especially lighter colored extensions. Chemical sunscreen contains the active ingredient avobenzone which can react with the hair proteins when exposed to UV light causing a chemical reaction that turns the extensions orange or pinky peach.

Tip # 2 - Protect You Hair While Swimming

Drench your hair with your favorite leave-in conditioner to prevent your hair from absorbing as much pool chemicals or salt water. Don't have a favorite? Here are mine.

My Favorite Leave-In Conditioners:

Amika leave-in conditioner

Amika The Wizard Detangling Primer: Great for fine to medium hair because it is light weight and won't make your hair look greasy. Click here to buy.

Amika leave-in conditioner

Amika Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Leave-In Conditioner: Great for medium to coarse hair that craves moisture. Hair will be 3x more hydrated after one use. Click here to buy.

Malibu shampoo, conditioner, and treatment

Tip # 3 - Wash You Hair After Swimming

Always wash your hair after swimming to remove sea salt and pool chemicals. Sea salt will make hair dry and brittle and pool chemicals will do the same while also being known for turning blondes green. I recommend using Malibu Swimmers Wellness Shampoo because it nourishes, strengthens and protects while preventing damage and discoloration. In the case of extreme discoloration Malibu also has a scrub to remove chlorine called Swimmers Wellness Remedy. Click here to buy. Treatments to remove build up and discoloration are very commonly offered at salons too. Another option would be to put your hair up in a high bun and avoid getting it wet.

Heatless curl set

Tip # 4 - Use less Heat

Don't use hot tools everyday. Mix it up by using a heat-less curl set or putting your hair in braids at night. Also try different hairstyles like half up half down with cute clips. Click here to check out the Bold Hearts Shop for hair accessories and tools.

Amika hydrating hair oil

Tip # 5 - Keep Your Hair Extensions Hydrated

Hair extension tend to need extra care when it comes to staying hydrated. I recommend applying hair oil to the ends of your extensions in the morning and before bed. My favorite oil for hair extensions is Amika Water Sign Hydrating Hair Oil. It is Amika's most hydrating oil that also protects hair against heat and breakage while also reducing frizz and boosting shine. Click here to buy.
