5 Ways to maintain your haircolor

When it come to maintaining your hair color it's a 50/50 relationship between you and your hairstylist. Once you leave the salon your hairstylist can only do so much. That is why it is so important to listen when they tell you the do's and don'ts of hair care. If your hairstylist isn't sharing then it's time to look for a new one because they're not allowing your hair to be the best it can be. Your hair color should look good even in between appointments. These 5 ways to maintain your hair color is what I share with all my clients. Aftercare is the key to maintaining your hair color. Read on to learn how.

1.) Do Not Wash Your Hair For 48 Hours.

When leaving the salon do not wash your hair for 48 hours to allow the color to absorb into the hair cuticle. During a color service the hair cuticle is opened to remove and deposit color. It needs time to close back down. If you wash your hair the day after a color it is too soon because the cuticle is still too open and the color will wash right out. By waiting 48 hours this gives the cuticle time to close back down meaning it will hold on to the color better.

2.) Home Care.

As a hairstylist I can only do so much like I said earlier. Once you leave the salon it is up to you to take care of your hair. What you are using at home for products makes a huge difference. What products are you using to keep your hair healthy? What products are you using to protect your hair from heat styling? I recommend that everyone uses a leave-in conditioner after washing their hair and a hair mask once a week. I recommend Amika Vault Color-lock Leave-in Conditioner. This leave-in instantly detangles, softens, and protects your hair color and vibrancy. Buy Leave-in.

Not sure which hair mask is best for you? Read my blog post."Which hair mask is best for my hair?"

3.) Your Shampoo & Conditioner.

The most important products for maintaining your hair color. Your shampoo needs to be sulfate free and both need to be color safe. I can only guarantee salon professional products. When your spending $200+ on your hair don't you want to make sure it lasts and stays healthy? Please be wary of drug store hair care. Many of these products may state that they are color safe & sulfate free but can actually be expired and not contain the best ingredients for your hair. Trust salon professional products. Amika is my favorite. All their shampoos are sulfate free and all their shampoos and conditioners are color safe.

4.) Do Not Wash Your Hair Everyday.

I know this is easier to do for some more then others but even every other day is a start. Invest in dry shampoo. With it I am able to go 4 days between washes. My favorite is Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo. Buy Dry Shampoo.

5.) Glosses Are Crucial For Keeping Your Color Fresh.

I recommend getting a gloss every 6 weeks to keep your color rich and from getting brassy. Glosses are also very conditioning and add shine to the hair. A common question I get is what is the difference between a gloss and a toner? They are actually the same type of color. The only difference is where they are done in the salon and how long they process for. Glosses are typically done at the chair and toners are done at the sink. Glosses process for longer giving your color more longevity. It is worth the extra few minutes in the chair.
