3 Reasons Why Hairstylists Dislike Box Hair Color

Hi my name is Jessalyn and I am a hairstylist located in Rollinsford NH (basically Dover). When it comes to box hair color obviously I am not a fan but when it comes to free will I am all about it. I understand enjoying creative freedom so if you enjoy coloring your own hair then I am for it. I use to love coloring my own hair even before becoming a hairstylist. I know for most using box hair color verse professional comes down to money and availability but here are 3 reasons why hairstylist don't like box hair color.

1.) Box Hair Color Is Damaging

Box hair color is pre-mixed color for multiple hair types meaning harsh chemical are used to achieve a result for a wide range of starting colors. Box hair color is cheaper but with all things the cheaper the product the lower the quality of ingredients. Yes professional is more expensive but it is customized to your hair and the results you are looking to achieve with a customized formulation created by a professional. The results are a gamble with box hair color and with professional the results are more predictable.

2.) Difficult To Remove

Besides damage another reason hairstylist aren't a fan of box hair color is it can be very difficult to remove. One type of color that I won't even attempt to remove or color is henna. I know people go for it because it is natural but once you color your hair with henna there's no removing it. Color removers and bleach will either do nothing to henna or a chemical reaction will occur caused by the minerals in the color which is extremely damaging. What happens is the hair will get hot and smoke causing the hair to melt and break off. So the only way to remove henna is by growing it and cutting it out. A chemical reaction can happen with any box hair colors which is why it is very important your hairstylist does a test strand before.

3.) Results Are Not Consistent

When you are not having a hairstylist mix your formula for you and use a box hair color the same results are not guaranteed. The box hair color could change its formula or be expired. You don't know how long it has been sitting on the shelve.

The purpose of this post is for you to be aware of the outcomes of using box hair color. The choose is yours however I will say when it comes to at home bleach please don't do it! Bleaching at home never ever goes well. I have had people come in to the salon after looking for a fix and the correction is more expensive then originally getting it done. Yes box hair color damage is drying but bleach damage is cotton candy hair breakage. You've have been warn. Lots of love. I hope you find this helpful.
