The summer is here! Which means spending more time in the sun and going in the pool. Long exposure to the sun and getting your hair wet while swimming will cause your hair color to fade quicker. It will also make your hair dry and dull. Your hair is going to need some extra love. Read on to learn 6 tips on how to protect your hair color from the sun and the water.

Tip #1 - Use Hair Products With UV Protection

Using hair products with UV protection is like using sunscreen but for your hair. I recommend Amika Vault Color Lock Leave-In Conditioner. A color-locking mist that instantly detangles, softens, protects vibrancy, and keeps color from fading. Click here to buy Amika Vault Color Lock Leave-In Conditioner.

Tip #2 - Wear A Hat

Always wear a hat when you know you are going to be in the sun all day. Especially at the beach or pool where you have a high chance of getting a sun burn. Not only will wearing a hat help expose less of your hair to the sun but it will also prevent your scalp from getting a sun burn.

Tip #3 - Avoid Getting Your Hair Wet At The Pool And Beach

I know this is tough if you want to go swimming. So if you think you are going to get your hair wet you need to first prep your hair to help protect it. You do this by wetting your hair in the shower, leaving in conditioner and putting your hair up in a high bun or swim cap. This helps by blocking chlorine and minerals from being absorbed into your hair.

Tip #4 - Always Shampoo Out Chlorine And Sea Salt

Immediately after you are done swimming use a clarifying shampoo and conditioner. Minerals and chlorine found in bodies of water will fade your hair color. That is why using a clarifying shampoo right after is so important. I recommend Malibu Swimmers Wellness Shampoo. Click here to buy Malibu Swimmers Wellness Shampoo.

Tip #5 - Rinse Your Hair With Cold Water

At the end of your shower rinse with cold water to close the hair cuticle back down. Heat opens up the hair cuticle and needs to be closed back down to allow your hair color to last longer.

Tip #6 - Use A Deep Conditioning Mask

Long exposure to the sun, minerals and chlorine will make your hair dry. Use a hair mask once a week to keep your hair soft and manageable. Need help picking a hair mask? Read: Which Hair Mask Is Best For My Hair?
